Abbeville, SC – Sept. 12, 2005 – Demonstrating a higher commitment to healthcare, Abbeville County Memorial Hospital today opens its new Abbeville Rehabilitation and Wellness Center to pace the area's population growth and follow a national emphasis on wellness. It is the first and only hospital-affiliated center for family wellness in the area.
The center includes comprehensive health resources from a walking track and exercise classes to cardiac rehabilitation services and support groups. The center will be open to the public and memberships are available.
“Fitness is one of the best forms of preventive medicine,” said Alvin Hoover, the hospital’s CEO. “Hospitals across the country are adding wellness centers as a means for both rehabilitation and disease prevention.”
Every staff member – from certified exercise physiologists to physical therapists – combines expert knowledge of wellness, health education and physical fitness to promote lifelong health.
“We want to build a healthy community for people young and old,” said director of rehabilitation services Ron Colaw.
The new 10,600 square-foot center will feature:
· Workout area with free weights
· Indoor walking track
· Variety of fitness class offerings
· Aerobics/health education classroom
· Cardiac rehabilitation
· Physical therapy
Aerobics and sculpting classes for every fitness level are scheduled to start in October with Pilates and yoga beginning shortly after. A walking club is in the planning stages and support groups are beginning to form for people recovering from heart disease or living with diabetes.
The Abbeville Rehabilitation and Wellness Center is located at 420 Thomson Circle in Abbeville. The facility will be open Monday through Friday, 6:30 am – 8 pm.
