This ranges from emotional support to social support and to helping patients access to other resources and assistance. Medical social workers collaborate with patients and their families to enable them overcome their psychosocial problems including issues pertaining to the illness and hospitalization. Typically they work with terminally ill patients, those with HIV/AIDS, patients involved with accidents, having to undergo amputations, Tuberculosis etc. Their ultimate goal is to enable a speedy recovery besides facilitating an optimal utilization of residual resources and rehabilitation.
