Abbeville Area Medical Center recently recognized Gloria Norris, RN, Operating Room staff member, as its 2010 employee Champion during a reception held at the hospital.
The “Stars and Champions” recognition program highlights the many ways AAMC staff members go above and beyond their job duties to help others. The “Star” award is given monthly and allows employees to nominate individuals who "shine" like stars by performing very specific kind acts that benefit physicians, patients and fellow employees. In December, all “Star” nominations were reviewed by a committee and a “Champion” chosen. The “Champion” award is given to the individual that has made the biggest impact.
Norris received her “Star” award for her relentless work throughout the year in support of Relay for Life. Her nomination read as follows: “Did you know that one in every three people will contract cancer and one in four will die from the disease? Within five years, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death according to the American Hospital Association. And then along comes a shining star that always gives and gives who has a heart of gold and wants to make a difference in the lives affected by this terrible disease. From selling baskets, t-shirts, or singing valentines, Gloria, out of the goodness of her heart, has put hard work, dedication and commitment into something that she feels is worth fighting for. Gloria, you deserve a “star” because of what you have done for the families, patients, and the community as well as for raising awareness for people who have suffered and are suffering with cancer. I know they appreciate the funds you have raised and your willingness, hard work and dedication. You are truly a shining star at AAMC!”
Through Gloria’s leadership, in 2010 AAMC’s Relay for Life team finished in the top 10% of teams in the South Atlantic Division for fundraising.
“Gloria’s passion for wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer and her ongoing support of Relay for Life as AAMC’s Team Leader is to be commended,” said AAMC CEO, Rich Osmus. | |
