Family Medicine Associates receives Laboratory Excellence Award
Family Medicine Associates (FMA) was recently awarded a Laboratory Excellence Award by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) after an on-site survey. This was given for the lab’s outstanding performance in quality patient testing and overall exemplary application of the principles of laboratory practice. This is COLA’s highest commendation.
As a result of the Clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1988 all physicians’ office labs that provide lab testing are required to meet certain quality standards. Labs can be certified as Waived, Moderately Complex or Highly Complex. The lab at FMA is a moderately complex lab and must submit to quality testing several times a year by an outside agency. As well, FMA has participated in the proficiency testing program provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Through the years, Family Medicine’s in-house lab has operated under the philosophy of providing testing that is done well, in a timely manner and cost effective to the patient. These quality results help determine the course of treatment during the office visit.
Family Medicine has operated a COLA certified lab since the early 1990s when Danna Norman, BS, MT (ASCP) was hired to organize and operate the lab. Mrs. Norman, Laboratory Coordinator, is now responsible for the quality outcomes of all labs within the physician practices at AAMC. Natasha Bell, LPN performs a majority of the lab services at FMA and plays a vital role in the quality results of the lab. Allen Kolb, MD has served as the Laboratory Director since the initial accreditation.
